Check, please
Last night we found a rat in our house. A rat! Not a mouse, mind you. An honest-to-goodness, get me out of here rat.
All right, let me back up a bit.
Last night OP, Basil, her fiance, and I went out to get a drink. It’s been a trying week all around, and we all needed to get out of the house. It was fun; there was loud (and frankly terrible) music, one available table, and we could each only afford one beer. Oh well. OP didn’t even drink half of hers anyway. When we got home, Basil’s fiance went to use the bathroom first. He shut the door, and we heard a very calm “You guys have a mouse.”
“WHAT!!” Basil and I said as the color drained from our faces, “do something!!”
“What do you want me to do? It’s really big.” Still no fear, disgust, or surprise in his voice.
“If we give you something, can you catch it?!” *Glad we didn’t go in there first*
“Well, hang on, I need to go to the bathroom.”
Let me just say at this point, NERVES OF STEEL, THAT GUY!
We passed him an enormous, empty coffee container and proceeded to yell completely unhelpful and unnecessary things at him through the closed bathroom door. “Don’t get bitten! What if it runs out from under the door?! What are you doing?! Have you caught it yet?! What are you going to do with it?! Close it in there really tight! Just corner it or something!”
Somehow, despite our hysterical help, he managed to trap it in the container and drop it outside across the street. “Don’t tell me how big it is” was the last shouted statement before we all clearly heard the loud thump and mad scrambling of the rat being let out of its prison. Ick. That was enough to tell us it was most definitely not a mouse. This thing probably wore clothes, worked a job, and paid taxes. Ick, again.
The rest of the night was spent scouring the rest of the apartment, cleaning and taking out anything that might smell good to a rat. Needless to say, I didn’t sleep very well as images of rodents sneaking up and surrounding my bed kept creeping into my dreams.
We will be call the exterminator on Monday.
Is it time to move yet?
